Tiarri Samms
Prime Samms were originally derived from the German Mutton Merino.
They are a dual purpose sheep, bred for both meat and wool production.
The breed was introduced into South Africa where it became the South
African Meat Merino or SAMM after the breed became adapted to the
harsher climate and further selection improved carcass and wool
quality. The breed was then introduced to Australia and is well suited
to our climate, particularly in low rainfall areas.
Samms have made a firm niche in our wool and Prime Lamb markets as a
breed on their own and also crossed with Australian Merinos where wool
quality is still high whilst improving carcass, milk production, growth
rates and lambing percentages.
Ongoing selection pressure and research are ensuring continuing
improvements in genetic traits and economic returns. Links to research
papers can be found at www.gracefield.com.au/research.html.
Tiarri Samms purchased top quality embryos in 2005, 2006 and 2007
from Rockdale Stud in Dumbleyoung which has given us a solid foundation
for our ongoing breeding program. Our stud in its early stages has
already won awards at Perth Royal Show, Wagin Woolarama and WAMMCO
producer of the month.
